White Glass Metalwork Ring

from 115.00

First this design, I first cut out the outline of the ring’s base plate from a thick sheet of metal and stamped the back of it with my maker's mark. I hand-filed the edge to give it a smooth look. I measured the stone’s height as well as its perimeter to work on the setting. I sawed out a strip of metal to a length that, snugly, fit around the stone. I molded the exact shape of the stone with the strip and soldered it closed. I, then, soldered the setting onto the ring’s base plate. For the embellishments, I torch-fired some pieces of metal to melt them into balls and measured, cut, filed, and shaped wire for the swirly details. All these components I, carefully, placed around the stone's setting and soldered them into place. For the ring shank, I hand-sawed a thick piece of metal, according to the desired ring size. I cut and shaped a piece of wire and soldered it onto the shank for extra flair. I, then, filed the ends so that they fit, flushly, against the back plate, and soldered it onto the back of the ring’s base plate, while assuring that it was centered. I tumbled the piece, for a substantial amount of time, until the perfect amount of strength and additional shine was reached. In the next step, I applied a darkening solution to blacken the design and bring out its unique beauty. During this process, I blackened the entire piece so that the solution seeps into every nook and cranny. I, then, thoroughly hand-polished the ring, making sure to leave any crevices untouched so that the newly-darkened details stood out against the high-polished finish of the embellishments. Finally, I inserted the stone into its setting and, carefully, molded the metal tightly around the stone in order to secure it in place.

Although it is a lengthy and messy process, the beautiful results makes it all worthwhile. As seen in the photos, the detail in, both, the ring's face and the ring's shank, give this piece a a statuesque look that will, surely, make the wearer the center of attention.
