Red Glass Ring

from 70.00

For this design, I first cut out the oval outline of the ring’s base plate from a thick sheet of metal and stamped the back of it with my maker's mark. I hand-filed the edge to give it a smooth look. I measured the stone’s height as well as its perimeter to work on the setting. I sawed out a strip of metal to a length that, snugly, fit around the stone. I molded the exact shape of the stone with the strip and soldered it closed. I, then, soldered the setting onto the ring’s base plate. The twisty, rope-like detail that surrounds the stone I created by, carefully, twisting a thick-gauged wire until the desired tightness was achieved. I molded it so that it followed the perimeter of the stone and soldered it to the ring. As I soldered the twisted wire onto the base of the ring, I simultaneously soldered it closed, being careful to make the join seamless. This usually takes an extra soldering step to fill in any gaps left in the join during the closing of the oval shape. For the ring shank, I cut out a thick piece of shank stock, according to the desired ring size. I hand-filed both ends of the metal so that they fit, flushly, together and soldered the ring closed. Then, I hammered the ring shank against a steel mandrel in order to shape it and bring the ring to the desired size. I soldered the ring and setting together, while assuring that it was centered. I tumbled the piece, for a substantial amount of time, until the perfect amount of strength and additional shine was reached. In the next step, I applied a darkening solution to blacken the design and bring out its unique beauty. During this process, I blackened the entire piece so that the solution seeped into every nook and cranny. I, then, thoroughly hand-polished the ring, making sure to leave any crevices untouched so that the newly-darkened details stood out against the high-polished finish of the twisted embellishment. Finally, I inserted the stone into its setting and, carefully, molded the metal tightly around the stone in order to secure it in place.

Although it is a lengthy and messy process, the beautiful results makes it all worthwhile. As seen in the photos, the twisted adornment that hugs the beautiful oval-shaped stone, gives this piece a simple, yet fancy look that will, surely, be the center of attention in your jewelry wardrobe.
