Color-Changing Ring

90.00

I handcrafted this design by, first, sawing out the outline of the ring’s base plate from a thick sheet of metal. I hand-filed the edges to even and smooth out the shape. I, then, measured the stones’ heights as well as their perimeter to work on the stones’ settings. I sawed out two strips of metal to, snugly, fit the measurements of the stones. I molded the exact shapes of both stones with the strips and soldered both strips closed. I soldered both settings onto the ring’s base plate. I, then, carefully and with as much precision as possible, hand-stamped the designs around both settings. For the ring shank, I hand-sawed a wide strip of metal, according to the desired ring size. I torch-fired the piece to soften the metal and be able to form it with less strain. I hammered the ring shank against a steel mandrel to shape, as well as texture it. Once the ring shank was formed, I filed the ends so that they fit, flushly, against the back plate, and soldered it onto the back of the ring’s base plate, while assuring that it was centered. I tumbled the piece, for a substantial amount of time, until the perfect amount of strength and additional shine was reached. In the next step, I applied a darkening solution to blacken the hand-stamped designs. During this process, I blackened the entire piece so that the solution seeps into every nook and cranny. I, then, thoroughly hand-polished the ring, making sure to leave any crevices untouched so that the newly-darkened details stood out against the high-polished finish. Finally, I inserted the stones into their corresponding settings and, carefully, molded the settings tightly around the stones in order to secure them in place.

Although it is a lengthy and messy process, the beautiful results makes it all worthwhile. As seen in the photos, the tear-shaped stone is an amazing color-changing glass that will show off its different hues, from a few colors at a time, to one solid color. I coupled this stunning stone with a turquoise glass that will pair, beautifully, with whatever color its neighbor decides to be at any given time. This smaller stone is not color-changing, therefore, its turquoise color will always remain the same.
