For this design, I began by sawing out the name plate from a thick piece of sheet metal and stamped the back of it with my maker’s mark. I hand-filed the edges to smooth and round them out. I drilled a hole in each of the top corners. I, then, cut, filed, and shaped wire for each letter. All these components I, carefully, placed and soldered them onto the thick sheet of metal, while assuring they stayed in place during the 'slippery' soldering process. When done with the main piece, I cut, shaped, and soldered small rings to hang the name plate from. Once the soldering was complete, I tumbled the piece, for a substantial amount of time, until the perfect amount of strength and additional shine was reached. In the next step, I applied a darkening solution to slightly blacken the design and bring out its unique beauty. During this process, I blackened the entire area of the name/word so that the solution seeps into every nook and cranny. I, then, thoroughly hand-polished the piece, making sure to leave any crevices untouched so that the newly-darkened details stood out against the high-polished finish of the letters. Finally, I attached the name plate to a fine chain that I finished off with a clasp, which I soldered closed, and added a dainty logo tag to.
Although it is a lengthy and messy process, the beautiful results makes it all worthwhile. As seen in the photos, the perfect amount of ruggedness of this piece gives it a very unique look, which will have you answering a lot of “Where did you buy it?” questions.
